Continuing Ed for Teachers
Outline of 500-Hour Program
(300 hours in addition to your 200 hours)
With Laura Erdman-Luntz, MA, RYT (500)
My intention for this advanced study program is to move you more deeply into your current practice. We will be studying Pranayama, meditation, and asanas much more methodically to deepen your practice (or get you back to it, as the case may be. :) ) I also wanted it to be much more focused on internal, home study rather than lots of workshops. You will have home study assignments for each month. I have approximate hours to expect detailed below. The more you are able to put into it, the more you will get out, of course, but plan on at least 2 hours each week. Much of the work is part of a regular home practice. Plus, I have spread the program out over two years rather than one so we wouldn't need to meet as often. I wanted to make it as easy as possible for you to fit it into your current life. You will note that of the three parts to the program, only one is “in-person”, one of the others can be done over the phone or in person, and the last is completely over the phone. Please let me know if you are interested in doing just pieces of the program. The parts that I see as being an option for doing alone are:
- Asana-Pranayama-Meditation portion
- Yoga Sutra Discussions (can be done as a teleclass or in person.)
- A Year of Living Nonviolently
- Any of the workshops individually
- Doing a complete day, if you are looking to submerse yourself for a day.
The program consists of three parts:
- Attending 22 day-long workshop held at Chanhassen Recreation Center. We will do only one each month for 22 months. The workshops will be Saturday and sometimes Sunday if a Saturday room isn’t available. The workshop goes from 9-5:30 (or so). The first is scheduled for 1/28. The outline is below, although it is subject to change.
- Participating in A Year of Living Nonviolently and whatever comes next year.
- Participating in a monthly two-hour Sutra discussion group in person or two one-hour Sutra discussions by teleclass each month.

Description of Program
Description of Classes
Asana-Med-Pranayama: Each session will begin with what I will call a “Master Class”. My intention with this portion is to help all of you go more deeply into your own practice; to take you to the next level. This class will be open to the public so people may attend who are not doing the entire program. We will begin with an asana portion. The asana portion will be geared more toward learning the pose for deepening your practice and teaching. Therefore, I will have selected an advanced pose ahead of time for us to study. We will warm up our bodies and then look at how the pose is done. It will also be a time for learning how to adjust the pose, with words, touch, and manipulation, see errors in bodies, etc. We will then do a Savasana followed by a guided Meditation. We will then do Pranayama followed by another Savasana. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Pranayama, it is controlled breathing and it is an integral part of a serious home practice. Being more conscious of your breath will make a significant difference on your consciousness. I will begin this portion in January with some very beginner breathing and take you to more advanced breathing as the year progresses. With both the Meditation and Pranayama portion, I intend to record the session and put it up on the website so you can use the guidance during the rest of the month for your own practice. You will need Donna Farhi’s book, Breathing, and Richard Rosen’s book, The Yoga of Breath.
Group: In the “Group” portion for the 500-hour, we will be studying a single beginner or intermediate pose each time. I will let you know which pose the previous month so you can study the pose for the month. Then we will look at it together and play with it. I will compile the notes so everyone can have a set of notes for each pose.
Workshops: I am not going to describe each of the workshops in detail. I think the titles are self-explanatory. Denise will be teaching the Chakra series for us.
Presentations: This time is set aside for each of your presentations. I firmly believe that if you want to really learn something well, learn it to teach it. Each of you will prepare a 30-60 minute presentation on ANY topic within yoga. It can be a lecture or asana based presentation. You must okay your topic with me ahead of time.
Yoga Alliance Registry: The Yoga Alliance has restructured their guidelines at both the 200- and 500-hour level. The new guidelines for the 500-hour program require 80 more contact hours. But the new guidelines do not go into effect until January 1, 2008 so we have two full years to get in this program. I have not yet received the Registry Mark, but I am in the final stages of my application and do not see any issues.
Make ups: Since I plan to only do the program one time, you will not be able to attend the workshop the next time around if you miss one. I am well aware that life comes up and you will probably miss some days. You will be able to make up the Pranayama and Meditation by listening to the website recording. You can make up the asana by getting notes from a fellow participant. I plan to video tape all the other workshops. I don’t intend to set a limit to how many you can miss. I know you are all responsible yoginis.
